IMC 2009: Steam Punk Wizard of Oz

For the Illustration Master Class we had some homework to do before we arrived.

Our assignment was to choose one of several stories that the faculty had provided and bring a tight sketch to show the faculty on our first day. This image would be critiqued and then we would spend the rest of the time during the week executing the piece.  One of the choices was to do a steam punk version of the Wizard of Oz, which is the coolest homework assignment ever.

  1. hi justin! first, let me say i'm reading your blog for a while now and i thank you very much for the big inspiration. the combination of watercolor and digital fits perfectly to your illustrations. but, i absolutely love your sketches!

and this time you just kicked my butt. i also did a steampunk version of the wizard of oz a while ago, for the cg challenge - in case you heard of - and i unfortunately i failed at doing a decent illustration. but because i was involved for quite a long time in this whole process this last post of yours is just fascinating.

i feel like a student who tried to do his homework and now sees the way the teacher would do it. so, even if you didn't mean it that way, thank you very much for the lesson! :)

    greetings from vienna,
